Anvil or Bypass Technology: which suits you best?

Introduction:

Selling high end garden equipment means that the products get more technical and their individual purpose becomes more specific. Therefore, ensuring the consumer is pointed towards the correct product that fulfils their needs is essential in ensuring they acquire the right product for them. Over the counter this is a simple task although that communication is somewhat lost when purchasing online. So hopefully this blog bridges that information gap and enables you to make the correct decision from the comfort of your own home when purchasing your next set of loppers or secateurs online. Although there are many other factors including pricing, quality, warranties, technology and grips the overriding question is which blade cutting technology is right for you: bypass or anvil?

The Difference:

Anvil technology cuts much like a knife utilising a blade which then forces its way through the plant onto a flat surface; i.e. like a knife on a chopping board. Although this provides up to 20% more power than bypass, consequently having the ability to cut branches larger in diameter it is harsh in nature and damages the end of the plant. Ideally, they are more suitable for dead wood or hardwood such as rose cutting.

Anvil

In contract bypass technology cuts much like scissors where little or no damage is done to the plant. It is therefore recommended for fast-healing, precise, stub-free cuts of thin stems and green branches. As a result, your plants heal faster and your garden looks healthier as the bypass technology slices through green branches rather than squishing them like anvil technology does.

The slim line head also allows you to reach hard-to-get places making them ideal for fiddley work in tight areas. Using bypass secateurs correctly is also essential in getting the most out of the benefits it can provide. When attempting to cut the branch back to a fresh node it needs to be done fairly close to the bud. Therefore, the use of anvil secateurs increases the likely hood that the cut will crush the bud or damage the end causing it to dry out and die. Alternatively, the bypass technology is much more accurate in operation and slices through the branch leaving fresh cut and a healthy undamaged bud for regrowth.
